<p>Not for us the monotony of the shopping mall and the carousel of consumerism, oh no&#8230;when we want to have a good time we make scarecrows!</p>
<p>Scaresheep in fact!</p>
<p><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qbb__43uGhA/TFCMxYXkHLI/AAAAAAAAAP0/NPy6zn1a45k/s1600/021.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499049925002140850" border="0" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qbb__43uGhA/TFCMxYXkHLI/AAAAAAAAAP0/NPy6zn1a45k/s320/021.JPG" /></a></p>
<p>We had a family day out, a brief respite before work starts on the big build, and visited the Muston village Scarecrow festival.<br />This has been running for a few years now and lots of villagers get involved. I&#8217;m amazed by the effort that goes in and by the new ideas people come up year on year. We had a great time scarecrowspotting!</p>
<p>Citygirl was with us and I could tell she wasnt sure and her expectations werent high, but that was before she saw this!</p>
<p><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qbb__43uGhA/TFCOUlAwEtI/AAAAAAAAAP8/j7IbGrsOKlw/s1600/026.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499051629203165906" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qbb__43uGhA/TFCOUlAwEtI/AAAAAAAAAP8/j7IbGrsOKlw/s320/026.JPG" /></a></p>
<p>The ScareSnowman!</p>
<p>The Village Green came complete with its own Morris Dancers&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qbb__43uGhA/TFCQNOuc8KI/AAAAAAAAAQM/mdAWCcX6aE8/s1600/030.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499053701985005730" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qbb__43uGhA/TFCQNOuc8KI/AAAAAAAAAQM/mdAWCcX6aE8/s320/030.JPG" /></a></p>

<p>I even got to meet my heroes Tom and Barbara from The Good Life (although BH insists I&#8217;m more of a Margot &#8211; cheek!)</p>

<p>I&#8217;m using Tomorite at the moment but I might give a more organic product a go, just to make me feel better. Either way your Tomatoes need a bit of extra help at this stage of their growth.</p>

If veggies are not picked then they will probably stop cropping. The fruit on my plum tree has just started to ripen all at once! pounds and pounds of lovely sweet eating plums will not wait for me to get back. Today I picked them all (thank heavens for dwarfing rootstocks!).
<div><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TEcx7n8WavI/AAAAAAAADuE/u0151HI24Nw/s1600/DSC07885.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496416770633132786" border="0" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TEcx7n8WavI/AAAAAAAADuE/u0151HI24Nw/s400/DSC07885.JPG" /></a> Halved them and bagged them up in ziploc bags in the freezer. Ready for jams, pies or crumbles when I get back. Maggoty plum ratio &#8211; about 1 in 20 &#8211; not bad!
<div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TEcxsJ7tH-I/AAAAAAAADt8/SfylSSaBBNQ/s1600/DSC07889.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496416504879325154" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TEcxsJ7tH-I/AAAAAAAADt8/SfylSSaBBNQ/s400/DSC07889.JPG" /></a> One small success is my first crop of <strong><em>Hinomaki Red gooseberries</em></strong>. A two year old bush having its first crop this year. Stunning to look at and very sweet. Quite promising for next year.
<div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TEcxZbpFk5I/AAAAAAAADt0/o3B7dgoI2Os/s1600/DSC00913.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496416183215559570" border="0" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TEcxZbpFk5I/AAAAAAAADt0/o3B7dgoI2Os/s400/DSC00913.JPG" /></a> So, dear readers, Buddy is going into kennels while we are away. I must admit to being a little anxious this time as he is now 14 years old and just beginning to show his age a little. He is an outgoing, confident chap and I am sure that he will make friends easily. I am off sailing around the UK, Scotland and Ireland on the Queen Victoria. I am excited to be meeting a fellow blogger Peggy in her home town of <span style="color:#006600;"><strong>Cobh</strong></span>, during my very first visit to Ireland, having only corresponded via her <a href="http://www.organicgrowingpains.blogspot.com/">Organic Growing Pains </a>blog. I will be dropping in for one day to say hello &#8211; <strong>in person! </strong>I will be back on August 1st. </div>

<em>Readers Question: I would like to ask if there are specific times of the day that you can only water the plants to maximize their growth. Thanks for being open for questions about gardening because I really want to grow more of our own plants in the next few months. <a href="http://gardenerstips.co.uk/blog/gardening/questions-on-gardenening/">from: Gardeners Questions</a></em></p>
<p>The best time of the day to water plants is in evening or early morning. This is mainly because the watering will be more efficient. Away from glare of sun, the water has time to seep into soil before evaporating. The main thing is getting the right amount of water to the plant, the time of watering won&#8217;t really affect growth. Though in greenhouses, watering in day, can help keep temperature down (dampening effect)</p>
<h3>Other Tips for Watering Plants</h3>
<ul>
<li>The most critical Time for watering is:</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
<ol>
<li>When in flower</li>
<li>When  fruits have started to form</li>
<li>When newly transplanted</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li>When you water, make sure it seeps down to roots and not just first inch of soil, otherwise roots will grow upwards not downwards. It is sometimes better to water a lot every week, than frequently and often.</li>
<li>Try mulching after a good water. Mulch is something that preserves moisture of soil.</li>
<li>Different Plants have much different needs for watering.</li>
</ul>

This probably means going out every day and picking because they grow so quickly this time of year. Last night these beans were cooked for 5 minutes then tossed in butter and garlic! Yum!
<div><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELDBNF5I7I/AAAAAAAADtk/G7W8lJYWWK0/s1600/DSC07862.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495168920807089074" border="0" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELDBNF5I7I/AAAAAAAADtk/G7W8lJYWWK0/s320/DSC07862.JPG" /></a> These lovely thin beans are an old variety <strong><em>Lazy Housewife</em></strong>. I first saw these growing down in Cornwall at the Lost gardens of Heligan. They were a popular variety in Victorian England.
<div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELCxIy2MdI/AAAAAAAADtc/hqQblntiYrQ/s1600/DSC07863.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495168644775555538" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELCxIy2MdI/AAAAAAAADtc/hqQblntiYrQ/s320/DSC07863.JPG" /></a> Despite earlier setting problems these are the first runner bean <strong><em>St George</em></strong> to get to eating size. It is especially important to pick runner beans when they are small and tender. You wait any longer and they are stringy and tough. This experience will put a child off eating them for life!
<div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELCi31j-5I/AAAAAAAADtU/xAL7eKIqTzk/s1600/DSC07864.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495168399705373586" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELCi31j-5I/AAAAAAAADtU/xAL7eKIqTzk/s320/DSC07864.JPG" /></a> Another old heritage variety survived being eaten by my dog Buddy! These are <strong><em>Mrs Fortune&#8217;s</em></strong> climbing beans.
<div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELCS-xZ02I/AAAAAAAADtM/Iw22CJb2f6Y/s1600/DSC07867.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495168126689071970" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELCS-xZ02I/AAAAAAAADtM/Iw22CJb2f6Y/s400/DSC07867.JPG" /></a> We&#8217;ve had a tiny amount of rain in the last couple of days but it just dries up immediately and does no good to the garden at all. You might remember to keep water in the birdbath for the birds but I have been noticing the number of honey bees drinking in my birdbath at the moment.
<div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELCCqiZJPI/AAAAAAAADtE/Uus1JtP3rgc/s1600/DSC07870.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495167846379496690" border="0" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELCCqiZJPI/AAAAAAAADtE/Uus1JtP3rgc/s400/DSC07870.JPG" /></a> Most of the time now there are 3 or 4 bees at a time sitting on the wet edge of the birdbath drinking water. I assume they have been going back to their hive and doing their <strong><em>&#8216;bee dance&#8217;</em></strong> telling the other bees where there is a supply of water.
<div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELB0Q67ETI/AAAAAAAADs8/9wp55GU3eF4/s1600/DSC07871.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495167598984892722" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CAbxtOKD8Tc/TELB0Q67ETI/AAAAAAAADs8/9wp55GU3eF4/s320/DSC07871.JPG" /></a> Your birdbath is not just for the birds. Make sure there is a shallow, wet side for the insects as well.</div>

Most of the roses are putting new shoots again; new buds are forming and soon they will be embellishing the garden for the second time around. In the meantime the summer bloomers are here; getting ready to go on stage&#8230; it’s their time to glow, time for the butterfly bushes, and hollyhocks and the glorious gladiolus to reign. It’s the time of the butterflies—the winged fairies that I so love seeing floating from tree to tree, from bud to bud; from flower to flower atop the waves of the wind&#8230; </span></div>

<p>I had to pull my <a href="http://www.mytinyplot.co.uk/planning/planting-elephant-garlic/">Elephant Garlic</a> because it was trying to flower. I&#8217;ve showed it here next to some Carrots I pulled at the same time so you can see how big it is. They&#8217;re about 8 or 9cm across. </p>
<p>I must confess myself a bit disappointed with the Elephant Garlic. It&#8217;s not as big as I thought it would be and also doesn&#8217;t seem to have split into bulbs quite as nicely as you see in the photos. Oh well &#8211; it&#8217;s still edible, I&#8217;m sure. </p>
<p>Next year I might switch back to my usual Garlic. You get more heads for the garden space and in a tiny plot you gotta use the space wisely. Is anyone else growing Elephant Garlic? Did you have success?</p>
